Setting the stage

Systemzero is AI platform built for enterprise finance teams. In its arsenal are set of agents that connect to a company's HR, finance and data systems to speed up finance workflows and provide deep insight. I joined to design the MVP agent experiences, working directly with the founder, product manager and a full-stack engineer.

I designed three flows. CFOs get a web copilot that answers strategic questions with sourced numbers, then hands off to deeper analytics. FP&A teams get a command bar that sits on top of PowerPoint and runs a team of review agents over the monthly board deck before it reaches the CFO.

The problem

Finance teams have plenty of dashboards, but they don't have the time to properly absorb all of the information, especially in the age of AI.

A CFO wants to know if the company is growing efficiently, not which report to open. An FP&A director spends days before every Financial Business Review (FBR) checking numbers, chasing commentary and guessing what the CFO will ask. That's a lot of busywork standing between a team and a decision.

Original lo-fi design

The original design had a welcome message, history panel, and three starting prompts.

Understanding the user

After consulting with the Systemzero team, I learned their users expressed needing guidance in what to prompt the copilot. It was important that this experience ease them into learning a new workflow.

I also centered the human in the loop: it was imperative to signpost SZ's work during its reasoning and request permission to perform actions such as creating follow up messages.

I deemphasized the history panel, ordered the chat window right below the welcome message, and arranged the prompts neatly below for guidance. The prompts appear in the chat input on hover, allowing the user to more easily see the connection between the prompt cards and the chat input.
